Mission Work at Lewis Center

"The world is my parish." - John Wesley

At Lewis Center UMC, missions is more than a project or an event, but a core part of our foundation as a church. Below, you will find ways to be a part of our church community as we find ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

Thank you LCUMC!

On June 4, the LCUMC Missions Team was proud to be able to present a check to Watoto Read for $20,239 which will build three classrooms for children in refugee camps in Chad, Africa. Each school will be able to teach 60 children, who otherwise would not be able to attend  school. This was a great effort by the church to impact the lives of children on the other side of the world and to give them hope for a better future. Thank you, LCUMC!

Other Opportunities to Help Our Community

People In Need Cookbook Drive

Calling all cookbooks!  Last fall, PIN began collecting and distributing cookbooks to their clients to encourage the pantry visitors to learn to cook, make healthier and more economical choices for their families.  Since the program started, they have distributed more than 300 cookbooks!  Their supply has dwindled due to the success of the program.

Through the month of June, LCUMC will collect new and gently used cookbooks to be donated to PIN.  These will be taken over on June 28th for the produce market.  Please bring your donations in and place them in the collection box in the Fellowship Hall.

People In Need School Shoes Drive

Beginning in July, People in Need, Inc. of Delaware County Ohio (PIN) will begin their annual school shoe drive.  This program helps low to moderate income families in Delaware County purchase shoes for their children.  Each child is given a $25.00 gift card to Payless to purchase a new pair of shoes.  In 2016, LCUMC donated funds for over 60 pairs of shoes!  Let’s see if we can donate enough for 75 pairs of shoes in 2017.

If you are interested in donating to PIN for the school shoe drive, place your money in an envelope marked “PIN School Shoe Drive” or donate at one of the kiosk stations.

The July communion offering will be donated to People In Need for the school shoe drive.

Church for All People 2nd Annual Men’s Clothing Drive

The Church For All People is need of new or gently used business-casual men’s clothing.  All sizes are needed!   The mission team will be collecting these items during the months of July and August and they will be delivered September 10th when we serve breakfast.

Donations will be collected on the coat rack on the east wall of the fellowship hall. Please hang suits or larger items on the coat rack or place your donations in the clothesbaskets.  Your clothing donation will enable a man to go to on a potential employer interview looking well-groomed and dressed!

Glen Oak’s School Supply and Backpack Collection

Glen Oak Elementary School provides for some of our school districts most underprivileged children.  The mission team has decided to partner with the Glen Oak PTO and the guidance counselor, Mr. Bickley, to purchase school supply boxes for in-need children.  We will also collect back packs for children of all ages/grades.

The cost of the school supply boxes is $30.00 per student and this provides their supplies for the whole year.  If you would like to donate, place your money in an envelope marked “Glen Oak School Supplies” or donate at one of the kiosk stations.

Backpack donations can be placed in the box labeled in the Fellowship Hall.

Local Partnerships:

People in Need:

People can sign-up to be a Food Pantry volunteer.  Jobs include sorting incoming donations, checking dates, preparing groceries for pick-up orders, and assisting clients in shopping in the PIN grocery store.  Available morning shifts are Monday-Friday from 9AM-12PM.  Afternoon shifts are from 1-4:30PM on Monday-Thursday and from 1-3PM on Friday.  Those interested should go to the PIN facility to see Lula Mae and fill out an application.  You must be 18 or older to volunteer in the food pantry.  Volunteers could sign-up to volunteer once a week or once a month or just get on the volunteer schedule as your schedule permits.

Church for All People:  We provide and serve breakfast on the 2nd Sunday of every month.  Members can sign-up to buy/prepare breakfast items (full list is in the big sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in our church building) and/or serve breakfast.  Those that are only donating food - can bring it to the church for those that are serving to take with them.  They meet at the church around 7:15AM and then arrive at C4AP by 8AM.  Breakfast is done around 9AM when the service starts and they clean-up and head home.

Communion Offering

The first Sunday of every month, we give thanks for God's blessings as we celebrate in communion. One way we give thanks is by collecting a communion offering that sent to either community partners or to mission projects of the church. Here is our schedule for the following communion Sundays for the rest of the year:

JuneUnity House in Delaware, Ohio.

July – Vacation Bible School Hands and Feet Project. This is the third year that our children and Sunday Schools have supported Hands and Feet in Haiti. Our children have communicated with the recipient children in Haiti and this has been an effective way to get our children excited about missions and what we can do to help others.

August – Shoe Drive for PIN.

September Church for All People

OctoberTurning Point, Delaware County.

November – People in Need for the coat drive that we sponsor.

December – To be determined.
